Labor Day is probably one of the biggest misnomers on our calendar, so let’s set the record straight. Labor Day is not a day when you should work. Labor Day is in fact a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. The holiday originated in 1882 as the Central Labor Union (of New York City) sought to create "a day off for the working man.” Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894. All 50 states have made Labor Day a state holiday. Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September in the United States since the 1880s. Politically, is doesn’t matter if you’re management or labor. We all deserve a day off. Luckily, we don’t have very far to go in our area to have a fantastic, bang-up Labor Day celebration. This weekend, Graettinger celebrates its 112th annual Labor Day Celebration with three full days of events and entertainment.
