UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The 16th-ranked Iowa basketball team will get a stern test today as they travel to Happy Valley.
Action is set to begin at noon and will be televised on ESPNU.
Penn State (13-12 overall, 4-8 Big Ten) is coming off a tight 66-65 victory at Indina on Wednesday.
The Nittany Lions trailed by 11 with 3:19 remaining before closing with a 13-1 run.
Penn State enters with a strong duo of D.J. Newbill and Tim Frazier. The two combine to average 33 points per contest — 45 percent of the team’s scoring.
Newbill is averaging a team-best 17.2 points, while Frazier adds 16.1 points. Last season in a pair of Iowa victories, Newbill went for 20 and 26 points, making 18 of 37 shots from the floor.
The Hawkeyes will be shooting for road win No. 4 at Penn State, which would surpass their total from last season.
Iowa has won five of the last seven meetings in the series with the two setbacks coming in University Park. The Hawkeyeshold a 25-13 advantage all-time in the series.
The Hawkeyes are coming off an 85-67 win over then No. 10 Michigan.
Iowa, Michigan and North Carolina are the only teeams with a road win against an AP top-three team this season. The Hawkeyes won at then-No. 3 Ohio State in January.
Devyn Marble comes in as Iowa’s leading scoer at 16.5 points per contest. Aaron White is right behind at 13.2. Melshan Basabe (7.8), Mike Gesell (7.6) and Adam Woodbury (5.7) are Iowa’s other starters.
