Chasing his high-school Impala

When Matt Stine saw the 1968 Chevy Impala, it was love at first sight.
You could even say it was his first love.
Stine recently completed restoration of the Chevy Impala, the first car he ever bought, in time for this year's Sweet Corn Days Sweet Car Show. He and other Black Knights Car Club members, along with car exhibitors from throughout the region, will show their cars at the Black Knights Car Club Sweet Cars Show noon to 4 p.m. Saturday on North Sixth Street.
Stine bought his Impala in 1987. The original color was green-gold, plus a few extra colors to go along with it. "When I bought it, it was six different colors," Stine said.
John Rink did the body, a Pontiac dark grew metallic that at first blush seems jet black.
Stine built the engine and transmission and restretched the seat colors. The car has factory disc brakes and 12-bolt posi rear end. There's also a factory wood steering wheel, tilt and floor shift. Stine did add a tach and extra gauges. About all that's left is hooking up the air conditioner.
You can see Stine's Impala - and a whole lot of other cars - at the fourth annual Black Knights Car Club Sweet Cars Show noon to 4 p.m. today on North Sixth Street in Estherville, just west of Library Square.
