Second annual Black Knights drag races draw crowds

Apparently drag racing is getting to be more and more of an equal opportunity sport.

Meagan King of Shakopee, Minn., proved that Sunday at the second annual Black Knights Car Club drags.

King, along with her husband, John, brought a car down to try her luck against a pretty hefty slate of competitors. Then Meagan's set of wheels was pretty hefty in its own right.

The 2001 Trans Am Firehawk has a 408 Stroker and cranks out 510 horse. It's set up for nitrous; however, Meagan hasn't run it through the engine yet.

John brought down his Saleen Mustang with a 400 block and vortec supercharger. Interestingly, both cars run on E85.

As of mid-afternoon Sunday, Meagan had run seven races - and hadn't been beat.

The Kings have been doing the racing circuit for nine or 10 years not. They've been racing throughout the Upper Midwest.

"We'll go anywhere where you can find a race," Meagan challenged.

So how did the Black Knights second annual drags fare compared to other venues?

"This is really lax," Meagan said. "This is really great."

Meagan seemed pretty comfortable pulling up to the line, waiting for the light to go green. Even though her Firehawk was just finished last week, she already drives it as though she's a part of it. "This is my car," she said proudly."

John shrugged. "She drives the kids to school in it."

"The little boys, they just love it," Meagan said.

So does she get a lot of attention in the car - from bigger boys as well as little?

"Somebody yelled at her that they loved her the other day," John said.

There were a total of 137 cars racing Sunday, with a paid admission of 1,309, bettering last year's crowd of an estimated 1,000.
