by David Swartz - Managing Editor

A small group of area residents took time to pray in Estherville's Library Square during the 2010 National Day of Prayer on Wednesday.

The group of about 25 included pastors Joel Jorgenson, Chris Neider, Doug Burton, Travis Rosinger and Glenn Bohmer.

They prayed for business, community, the media, government, education and churches.

A prayer was said for each segment with participants encouraged to add their own thoughts. The opening prayers are as follows:

Business/Community

"Father we confess that we are a nation that is obsessed with material things and the more we get, the more we want. While this spirit has severely damaged our economy, our corporations, and our people, it has also infected the church and our personal lives in more ways that we like to admit. Too often we have turned a blind eye to business practices and profits and failed to be people who stand true to Your Word in all that we do. We pray that your Spirit will move across the nation and bring conviction where we have put our trust in finances and lost clarity on biblical ethics. And we pray for a powerful movement within our business and companies to restore godly character and values and purpose."

Media

"Lord, it's easy to make the entertainment world and today's media the scapegoat for the destruction of godly values and morality and decency in our nation. But the truth is that we have blindly allowed video games and television to become the nanny of our children; we too often watch all sorts of movies that we know we shouldn't watch; and we often fail to control what is seen and heard in our homes. While there is much to blame the media about, there is much in our own lives that is inexcusable. We ask you to show us if there are areas of our life or areas of our family's life where we are allowing in unhealthy influences and messages. Father, enable us to take a stand for what is right and to repent of any sins."

Government

"Father, we pray that You will protect the health and safety of the president, his advisers, and their families, as well as those in congress and in our courts. We ask that You give them an abundance of wisdom and direction for the decisions they must make and the strength of character to not compromise on what they know is true and best. We trust You to turn their hearts toward You and that by Your power You will guide them through all the questions and situations they find themselves in. May they always humble themselves before You, seek Your counsel, and follow Your ways in doing what is right and good for all."

Education

Father in heaven, we thank You that so many of the founding fathers of our nation were so strong about the role of religion and morality in the shaping of our educational foundations. But we have moved so far away from that foundation today that school prayer and Bible reading in classes and even the posting of the Ten Commandments in a school classroom have been ruled unconstitutional. And we're paying the price for the loss of morality in our young people's lives. Bring a revival of godliness and a movement of the Holy Spirit among those who can influence and change these harmful policies as well as amongst our youth who desperately need to know you."

Churches

"Lord, we pray that You will strengthen our pastors and church leaders with the superior strength of grace that alone is adequate to the calling You have given them. May they be men and women of integrity who will not compromise Your Word and in whose hearts holiness and purity beat strong. May Your Holy Spirit Permeate their spirit and anoint them to preach and teach the Gospel with power and touch the lives of those who hear them. Keep them from temptation and peril; open their eyes and hearts to situations that will bring harm to them and to Your name and give them the faith they need to trust you and follow you at all times."
