Demoney second-graders lay down the miles

May 7, 2010
By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer

There's a bunch of Demoney Elementary second-graders whose parents have to run to keep up with them.

Nine students in Mrs. Sue Guge's PE class walked 20 miles or more through the Fitness Finders "Feelin' Good Mileage Club".

The students have been spending their noon recess walking. For each mile completed, a student gets a token "foot" which is put on a ring the student can put on a book bag or belt loop.

As of the end of April, second-graders had tallied 1,006 miles which includes miles both inside or outside, depending on the weather.

The top walkers completing over 20 miles were: Brady Hanson, 21 miles, Jacob Jensen, 83 miles; Lena McCoy, 23 miles; Chase Olson, 54 miles, Christian Sheridan, 23 miles; Molly McCauley, 22 miles, Colby Olson, 56 miles; Domonick Roskam, 61 miles and Carson Waddell, 37 miles.

Guge thanks the ELC Site Council for giving the money for the program. The money comes from the elementary activity account, one of the main sources which is through the Box Tops For Education Program.

Guge said students in the five second-grade classes will continue to walk until the end of may. She said the class with the most miles will get a special treat.
