Local blood drive collects 66 units

February 17, 2011
Estherville News

The St. Patrick's Catholic Daughters of the Americas sponsored the blood drive which was held on Thursday, Feb. 10 at the Duhigg Center. About two-thirds of those signed up came in to donate and we were able to collect 66 units of blood which can go to aid almost 200 patients in need.

Vicki Garrelts received her 1 gallon pin-way to go Vicki!

Many of the donors enjoyed the vast array of goodies provided by the Catholic Daughters and even stayed to visit a bit longer and snatch another cookie.

At 3 p.m., we were joined by five brownies who worked in the canteen area in order to achieve their Community Service patch. It is so nice to see such young people giving their time in an effort to help others. Thank you brownie Troop #136, keep up the good work.

I have heard some grumbles that the Red Cross is pushing the Sioux Valley Blood Service (who serve Avera Holy Family), out of Estherville. This is NOT true. Sioux Valley comes each June and December for blood drives at the hospital, and if I am able, I go and donate there. I worked this schedule out with Mike, who manages the hospital lab and is in charge of having Sioux Valley come for their drives twice a year.

The Red Cross plans drives only in February, April, August and October here in Estherville.

The next Blood Drive is scheduled for Tuesday, April 26 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. at the Duhigg Center and is being sponsored by Sleep Inn. Please mark the date on your calendar and call me for an appointment at 721-209-0922.

Thank you to everyone who comes out to donate and support the Red Cross in the many wonderful activities they are involved in. Remember the Red Cross is not just about blood; we do so much more.

Red Cross Blood Drive Coordinator for Estherville
