Talk about dedication.

Joyce Anderson has served Prairie Lakes AEA faithfully for over 30 years June 21 she'll retire from her position as secretary.

Anderson, who graduated from Mason City High School, came with her husband, Ron, to Estherville in July 1977 when he bought Hubacher's Hardware and Western Auto. Joyce stayed home to care for their adopted children, Michael and Amanda, then started working at the AEA in 1981. She saw the AEA through three moves, starting at the Parkview Clinic building on North Seventh then going to Forsyth Law Office then just north of the Daily News on North Seventh and finally to the current location at the northwest corner of Ninth Street and First Avenue North.

So why would anyone want to work for 30 years at the same place?

"It's the people," Anderson said without hesitation. "I feel honored to be just a little piece of people that do such a great thing for children and families. It's a great staff."

As one would expect, one of the biggest changes Anderson has seen is upgrades in technology that have seen typewriters go by the wayside in lieu of desktop and laptop computers.

During that time, Anderson is proud to have been a part of the AEA's mission that includes family services such as hearing testing, occupational therapy, school psychologists and social workers - all provided as no charge to parents of children under 21.

Like other agencies dependent on government funding, Anderson sees AEA employees challenged to cover more ground with less help.

"They're always looking for people to continue those services."

Upon retirement, Anderson as First Lady of the Black Knights Car Club will travel to car shows throughout the region with her husband Ron. This fall she's looking forward to traveling to Tennessee to take in the sights of such attractions as Graceland.
