HPV immunizations for 6th grader?

To the Editor,

As parents of a 6th grade student we recently received in the mail a letter informing us of the opportunity to have our 6th grader immunized at the school for three specific immunizations.

One of those was the immunization called "Gardasil". Gardasil is an immunization for HPV or the Human Papillomavirus. Now I will confess that I am not a doctor and do not pretend to be one but I am someone who does want to think critically about how and why we do certain things with our children.

Human Papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted disease that is passed on through genital to genital contact.

My problem with this immunization is not whether it is effective or even a good idea, my problem is that as a culture we are developing immunizations for behaviors rather than teaching and educating our children the healthiest ways to live.

In the 14th century the Jewish people were accused of creating the bubonic plague to try to kill off Christians. They figured it had to be this way because the Jewish people weren't getting the plague.

The reason the Jewish people weren't getting the plague was because they were living according to God's health standards prescribed in Old Testament law.

I find it hard to believe that we have come to a place where we are now using tax dollars to finance the immunization against illicit sexual behavior rather than spending that money to educate our kids about the best way to live.

At some point we have to stop trying to inoculate ourselves against sin and recognize that the consequences can be avoided if we would live according to the way God has prescribed for us to live in his word.
