ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for Joan Mortimore, 77, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at First Christian Church in Estherville with Pastor Lynn Elrod officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery in Estherville.
She died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at The Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.
Joan (Thorsland) Mortimore, was born Jan. 24, 1935, to Lewis Thorsland and Ethel (Pickell) Thorsland.
She graduated from Estherville Schools.
She married Arnold Smith in 1953 in Jackson, Minn. Steve Smith Sr. was born to this union. They later divorced.
She worked many years at Mortimore's Grocery for Shorty's dad, Warren Sr. This is where she met Shorty and later they were united in marriage in 1980 in Tacoma, Wash. Shorty and Joan continued to operate Mortimore's Grocery until Shorty's health forced him to retire in 1989. After retirement Shorty and Joan spent many miles behind the wheel traveling, whether it was visit her son Steve in Washington, or just to take trips with other family members. This was also done while Joan worked part time at Super Value. Shorty died on Dec. 21, 1993. Joan then went to meet her new family at Fareway where she continued to work until January of 2011. Joan has shared many fond memories of her time spent at Fareway. Joan loved spending time with all of her family and friends. Joan especially enjoyed going to the casino, or out to eat, or shopping with Leona Fisher. She was a member of First Christian Church and the VFW Auxiliary.
Joan is survived by grandsons, Steve Smith Jr. (Darcy) of Spirit Lake and Keith Smith of Puyallup, Wash.; brothers, Arnold Thorsland of Estherville, Robert Fisher (Diane) of Terril, Francis Fisher (Vicki) of Eldridge and Jack of Estherville; step-son, Mark Mortimore of Georgia; step-daughters, Lillian Herum of Estherville, Jolene Engbretson of Estherville and Julie Hansen of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four great-grandchildren, Kevin and Kirsten Smith of Spirit Lake and Mia and Roman Smith of Puyallup; many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; shopping, casino playing and dinner companion Leona Fisher; special friend Lisa Nitchals; sisters in-law, Wilma Matthes, Adoline Mortimore, Barbara Molacek, Nadine Vigdal and her husband, Dave, and many other family members and friends.
Preceding Joan in death were her parents and grandparents; husband, Warren (Shorty) Mortimore Jr.; step-son, Garth (Butch) Mortimore; brother, Richard Thorsland; son Steven Smith Sr. on Jan. 5, 2012, and brothers-in-law, Steve Molacek, Lester Mortimore.
Joan will be loved and missed by many.
