LeRoy (Roy) Powers, 78, of Sun City, Hilton Head, passed away on April 12, 2012 at his home, after a short battle with cancer.
He is survived by loving wife Marilyn Powers and five children: Tim Powers (Rita), of Atlanta, Georgia; Todd Powers (Jennifer) of Santa Rosa, Calif.; Rick Craig (Edie) of Monticello, Minn.; Troy Craig (Brigette) of Big Lake, Alaska; and daughter Tami Galioto (Bill) of Golden, Colo.; 11 grandchildren: Amy, Ryan, Joanna, Jennifer, Sam, Cody, Beau, Tessa, Zach, Abby, and Hunter; one brother, Allen Powers of Naples, Fla.; and one sister, Marian Candler of Naples, Fla., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Vera, his first wife, Joan, two sisters, Elnora and Wanda, and nieces Patricia and Alyssa, and nephew Ken.

Mr. Powers completed his bachelor's degree and master's degrees at State College of Iowa. He began his teaching career at Escambia High School in Pensacola, Fla., where he initiated an annual Science Fair. Later Roy was employed at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville for 30 years as Department Chair of Math and Science. While there, he initiated programs in aviation, computer science and environmental science. Roy's passion was golf; he was the team coach for 20 years at ILCC and achieved five holes in ones in his golfing career. He, with his Zoology club built massive snow sculptures for the local Winter Sports Festival. The prize money allowed him to take his club on annual field trips to Florida and Puerto Rico. He built an obstacle course for use for the entire community.
In 1993, Roy and Marilyn semi retired by moving to Guam and teaching there for a total of eight years. While there, they traveled the Eastern hemisphere together going to places such as Bali, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Australia, Fiji, Yap, Palau, Philippines, Okinawa and Korea.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 16, 2012 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC 29910. The family requests any memorial donations be made to Iowa Lakes Community College, Estherville, Iowa, 51334.
