Readers are shining stars

Estherville Daily News

Estherville Lincoln Central elementary students are stars in their own right in the "Reach For The Stars" reading program.

Students participated in an Usborne Books "Reach For The Stars" reading fundraiser in April to celebrate reading month. The Parent Action Team (P.A.T.) along with elementary teachers collaborated to help each student reach his or her goal of reading 300 minutes in two weeks. Students received pledge-based donations from family and friends to help raise money for smartboards. The fundraiser gave 100 percent of the donated money back to the student, the classroom and P.A.T.

A total of 107,020 minutes was read by 566 students. The participating students earned over $11,000. P.A.T. would like to thank the classroom teachers for all of their extra work and effort to help encourage and motivate their students to reach their goals. A big thank you also goes out to the families for helping this fundraiser be such a huge success.

ELC student athletes helped celebrate with the winning classrooms by joining them for a pizza party. Those students included Evan Hansen, Gable Bonner, Derrick Neiland, Cole Mace, Joe Clayton, Allie Sievert, Casey Sievert, Alyssa Johnson, Emily Kirchner and Kendall Bosch.

Winning classrooms included: kindergarten, Mrs. Fiene; first, Mrs. Evans; second, Mrs. Peters; third, Mrs. Friesner; and fourth, Mrs. Helmich.

We need to congratulate each and every one of these kids of their efforts - as well as their teachers who inspired them to read.

They remind us of a very important thing: Today's readers are tomorrow's leaders.
