June is Dairy Month and while there are no full dairy herds in Emmet County, supporting the industry is just as important.
According to the Iowa State Dairy Association, Iowa ranks fourth in ice cream production, sixth in the production of American cheese as well as cottage cheese and seventh in the number of dairy herds.
In 2010, Iowa's 209,000 milk cows on 1,922 dairy farms produced 4.34 billion pounds of milk. That averages to 20,751 pounds of milk per cow.
The state produced 240 million pounds of cheese.
Not as well known, there are 214 goat farms (2010 statistics) with 31,000 dairy goats.
The dairy industry in Iowa provides 26,000-plus jobs including jobs on farms, dairy processors and other services that benefit and aid the dairy industry.
All that contributes more than $1.5 billion to the economy.
Also Des Moines is the No.1 large city per capita in the consumption of milk.
With the dog days of summer approaching, it doesn't take much convincing to grab some ice cream or a cool glass of milk.
