Run for the Cob draws record numbers

Event features half marathon for first time

Sweet Corn Days 2012 annual Run for the Cob featured its first half-marathon race for the event on Saturday.

Samuel Fransen and Jeff Johnson, both of Jackson, Minn., set a torrid pace for the first-ever event with a 1-2 finish. The event started at 7 a.m. with 16 participants.

Fransen and Johnson both ran the event in under an hour and a half with Fransen, 20, clocking in at 1 hour, 24 minutes, 25 seconds. Johnson, 43, finished the race in 1:27:32.

Brian Craig of Armstrong finished third in 1:35.32.

Fransen said he runs cross-country and track for Gustavus Adolphus College.

Andriette Wickstrom, 57, was the first female to finish with a time of 1:39.26. She was fourth overall with two other females not too far behind as Leah Hartung, 25, finished in 1:46.33 while Jody Wilson, 50, finished in 1:46.42.

Tina Burton, one of the organizers of the event, said this year's Run for the cob had great participation.

Twenty-seven runners competed in the 10K race with 141 in the 5K. Also 52 took part in the 1-mile fun run for a total 236 participants.

Proceeds for the race benefit the Estherville Lincoln Central/Armstrong-Ringsted High School and Iowa Lakes Community College cross-country programs.

Winning the 10K race was 19-year-old Luke Hinton in 43 minutes, 58 seconds.

Melissa Skrepak was the top female runner as she finished in 47:42 to place fourth overall.

In the 5K race, 16-year-old Ryan Bauermeister won in 16:31. Kristin Ellrich was the female winner in 21:05. She placed 20th overall.
