MARSHALLTOWN - The Iowa Lakes Community College Men's and Women's cross-country teams took part in the Region Time Trial meet hosted by Marshalltown Community College on Saturday. This meet is held each year and includes all the community colleges in Iowa that have a cross-country program.

The Laker women placed fourth out of eight teams.

"This is great placing for us," said Iowa Lakes coach Molly Struve. "Each year the top three teams remain the same in our region, so earning a solid fourth place is a great achievement for us.

Leah Courtney led the Lakers with an eight-place finish in 20 minutes, 47 seconds on the 5K course. Sydney Park finished 27th in 23:20, Melissa Gjerde finished 30th in 23:47, Karen Gonzles finished 32nd in 24:02 and Sam Piehl finished 36th in 25:18.

Also running were Emily Hanson, who finished 39th in 25:56 and Kayla Stenberg, who finished 46th in 27:51.

"We were missing one of our middle runners, Alyssa Ayers, at this meet due to injury so hopefully once she gets healthy our points will be even lower," said Struve. "Leah placed 8th, and actually led the race for about a half mile. She is running strong right now and I look for her to be our top runner. Sydney, Melissa and Karen are looking strong too and I look for them to keep dropping their times from week to week."

The Laker men placed fifth out of seven teams.

"We have five men on the team, with Andrew Kruger being our top runner right now," said Struve. "Even though this was the first collegiate meet for three of the men, they ran very well and looked strong at the end."

Kruger finished 33rd in 18:10 over the 5K course. Teague Anderson finished 44th in 19:10 while Luke Hinton placed 49th in 19:55, Kyle Kephart placed 52nd in 20:11 and Cody Wikoff placed 55th.

"Teague really stepped it up at this meet," said Struve. "This is the best I have seen him run since we started practice three weeks ago. Luke is doing much better than at this time last year and I look for him to keep improving as the weeks go on.

The next meet for the Lakers is the Nike Heartland Preview Meet on Saturday, Sept 8 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
