The second annual Fort Defiance Day will be held Saturday, Oct. 6 in conjunction with the first-ever Estherville Area Chamber of commerce fun run and Octoberfest which will immediately follow. Both events will be held at the lodge at Fort Defiance State Park.
Members of the Friends of Fort Defiance made plans for the event Tuesday.
Fort Defiance Day gets under way at 11:30 a.m. and continues until 3:30 p.m. A sandwich with chips, drink and dessert will be available at the lodge for $5 along with music and nature photo displays.

Plans also call for a cooking demonstration by Boy Scouts outside the lodge. There will also be leaf drawing activities outside the lodge for the kids, conducted by Iowa Lakes Community College environmental studies students.
Gary Phillips, Friends president and director of the Iowa Lakes environmental studies program, will demonstrate fly tying and there will be a speaker on the topic of organic gardening.
This next Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m., the Friends will hold a work night in conjunction with Nick and Josh Young who are coordinating a volunteer project at the lodge. Also participating will be Phillips' environmental studies students and any other volunteers. The work night includes staining picnic tables and trimming trees.
The Friends will also meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 at the lodge to finalize plans for Fort Defiance Day.
Anyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in Friends work nights and meetings. It's a great way for students to earn Purple Cord hours. The Friends group is compiling a record of volunteer hours as an in-kind contribution toward future grants.
