Police investigate gunfire at motel

It appears no one was targeted

September 11, 2012
Estherville Daily News

Estherville police say so far an investigation into a report of gunfire around 6 p.m. Monday near the Super 8 Motel hasn't turned up anything.

Chief Eric Milburn tells KUOO news officers were called to the scene and detained three people for questioning. All three cooperated with police.

Milburn says interviews with 10 different witnesses produced conflicting information. As a result, he says they still aren't sure exactly what happened. Milburn says officers will continue to conduct additional interviews to try to reconcile conflicting information.

Milburn adds it appears no specific individual or building was targeted.

He says the DCI crime lab is conducting a forensics test.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Milburn says whoever's responsible would likely be charged with discharging a firearm in city limits, a simple misdemeanor.

So far, no one has been arrested or charged. Milburn says those who were detained for questioning have since been released.

Anyone with firsthand information into the incident is being asked to contact the Estherville Police Department, which is being assisted by the Emmet County Sheriff's Office in its ongoing investigation.
