Riley tells of Planet Heart

September 20, 2012
By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer , Estherville Daily News

As of Oct. 18, Estherville residents will be able to get a thorough heart and vascular screening right here at home - for just $75.

Rose Riley, R.N., local director of the Avera Heart Hospital Planet Heart program, told Estherville Rotarians Thursday about the program that offers both a heart check (over an $800 value) and a vascular check for $75. The heart check is also available separately for $50 as is the vascular check, also for $50.

The heart check includes:

n Calcium score CT - crucial to early detection of heart disease.

n Blood pressure.

n BMI (body mass index).

n Cholesterol and blood sugar check.

n Education and risk assessment with an expert cardiovascular team.

n Diet quality index.

n Brief tobacco and nutrition counseling (as needed).

The vascular check for includes three tests designed to detect the conditions of vascular disease. If detected early, treating vascular disease lowers your risk of stroke, heart disease and other complications. The vascular check includes:

n Carotid artery screening.

n Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening.

n Peripheral artery disease screening.

Again, both checks are available for $75.

Jen Hough, Avera community relations manager, said the program based out of Avera in Sioux Falls, S.D. will be located where the reception area was formerly at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville. Appointments are being taken now at 362-6137.

Riley outlined the procedure and said patients will get the results immediately.

Hough said that due to the low cost the check can not be billed to insurance.

Avera Dr. Jim Creech explained specifics of the procedures.

"If nothing else, the goal is to get you in and get things checked over," Dr. Creech said.

Hough said the check will initially be held two days a month, and Dr. Creech said up to 10 patients a day may be tested. Riley said 70-80 Avera employees have already undergone the check.

To schedule the check, call (712) 362-6137.
