Today AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day

September 21, 2012
Estherville Daily News

Today is AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day, a great time for all of us to look inside ourselves and become a better friend to everyone's best friend.

So what does responsible dog ownership really mean?

It means caring for any dogs in our ownership or under our supervision, of course. And that means adequate food, water, shade in the summer and a warm place to stay in the winter. Not only that, it means giving dogs plenty of room to exercise and taking them for daily walks. And it means paying attention - think of them as people but with four legs and a tail.

Beyond that, though, responsible dog ownership means spaying or neutering pets. Unwanted litters often only mean dogs abandoned along the roadside or left at animal shelters.

And speaking of animal shelters - they're an excellent place to find your next pet. Our shelters are filled with pets with plenty of personality and love.

If you want to know more about adopting a dog or other pet, visit the Emmet County Animal shelter at www.emmetcountyanimalshelter.org. Or else call 712-209-8841 or e-mail them at kristy@emmetcountyanimalshelter.org.

Companion animals have proven to be very therapeutic for those living alone, people in grief, the elderly or even those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

You can make a difference in a special dog's life. And who knows. Your life could be all that much richer for it.
