EMMETSBURG - Members of the Iowa Lakes Swimming and Diving team can't wait to start their season and they're willing to lose a little sleep in order to 'make a splash' at the first possible second. That's why they'll be gathering at the Arthur and Audrey Smith Wellness Center on the Iowa Lakes Emmetsburg campus at 12 a.m. Monday morning (Sunday night).
The National Junior College Athletic Association allows swim teams to officially begin the competitive season at exactly 12 a.m. Monday. Iowa Lakes coach Johnathan Jordan says his student-athletes are energized and want to begin.
"At the present time, we are participating in 'off season workouts' which puts many restrictions on how a team trains," Coach Jordan said. "Our athletes are excited to start another great year."
The public is invited to watch the team in its first practice. Since this is a time the Wellness Center isn't typically open, those attending are asked to come in through entrance #22. The practice will take approximately 2 hours and visitors are welcome to come and go.
"I'm pleased that our students are excited about starting their swimming season," Coach Jordan said. "Our first match-up will be Nov. 1 against Iowa Central at home."
This year, coach Jordan is joined by graduate assistant Mike Smiechowski, who comes to Iowa Lakes from Apex, N.C. He brings 13 years of competitive swimming experience to Iowa Lakes, including four years swimming at the Division 1 level.
