Fifth Graders Launch Rockets

October 8, 2012
Estherville Daily News

5th graders have been launching rockets for 40 years at Estherville/ELC schools. 5th grade builds Viking rockets and launchs using B6-4 engines. These rockets fly to an altitude of 1650 feet in the air.

The students that were involved are the classrooms of Mrs. Margaret White, Mrs. Joan Lauritsen, Mrs. Brenda Reeves, and Mrs. Robyn Swisher. Fifth grade teacher Mrs. Abby Schacherer also participates in our launch assistant. Shari Bisgard has volunteered her services in leading the launch for over 5 years. The fifth grade students and teachers really appreciate her assistance and expertise in making the launch enjoyable and safe.

The launch equipment, which we update as needed for safety, is designed by Estes Model rocketry, but modified for safety. Former fifth grade teacher, Larry Morphew, modified the launch buttons to promote safety for the students when he began the model rocketry project, and we continue to use his launching safety buttons 40 years later! Thanks, Larry for keeping our kids safe.
