The second annual Fort Defiance Day had a big boost when the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce pitched in to co-host the Fort Defiance Day/5K run/Octoberfest/Brad Morgan concert.

Yeah, that's quite a mouthful, but there was a lot going on Saturday - not just at the lodge but in Estherville and the surrounding area.

For the Friends, the day started at 11:30 with lots of demonstrations and exhibits by students in Gary Phillips' environmental studies program and Debbie Wilson's graphic design program, both at Iowa Lakes Community College.

Woodcarver Bob Isebrand of Dolliver demonstrated his craft and displayed his wares at the lodge Saturday.

Phillips demonstrated fly tying - one of his specialties. And master woodcarver Bob Isebrand of Dolliver demonstrated some of his wonderfully whimsical creations such as a hobbit house carved from tree bark.

Mike Clarken demonstrated Dutch oven cooking as it was done 150 years ago, with the added bonus of some scrumption cooking.

Inside the lodge, folks had a great meal of pulled pork and sidled up to the fire to share memories of the park.

After the Friends event, it was time for the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce's 5K run. Thirty runners took advantage of the cool fall weather and ran to the west park entrance then returned to the loop on the east side of the park and back to the lodge. There was good representation by both the Estherville Lincoln Central and Iowa Lakes Community College cross-country teams.

Afterward, everyone enjoyed a great Octoberfest meal then some down-home music by country artist Brad Morgan.
