Trailing by 12 points to start the fourth quarter, Estherville Lincoln Central's offense woke up and scored 12 straight points to tie MOC-Floyd Valley at 33-33.

However, the Midgets didn't score again while the Dutch scored the final nine points-seven from the free throw line in the final minute-to pull out a 42-33 on Friday.

In a battle between the No. 2 and No. 3 rated teams in Class 3A, ELC's defense was the story of the first quarter. Emily Kirchner scored all three of the Midgets' points as ELC led 7-5.

However, the Dutch offense kicked into high gear in the second quarter as they led 25-15 at halftime.

The third quarter was like the first in a low-scoring affair before the final fourth quarter flurry by the Midgets.

"The first three quarters, we couldn't put anything together offensively as we could hardly complete two or three passes of our offense," said ELC coach Tony Klein. "They we got impatient.

"In the fourth quarter, we got them on their heels and were able to execute," he said.

ELC had chances to take the lead after tying the game at 33-33, but couldn't knock down a couple open looks.

Kirchner led ELC with eight points while Macy Dahl finished with seven, Allis Sievert had six, Casey Sievert had five, Caitlyn Clayton had three and Maggie McCauley and Sara Heywood each had two.

Both teams had just two 3-pointers. ELC was 9-of-14 from the free throw line while the Dutch were 12-of-16.

Emily McDonald led the Dutch with 13 points while Alexas Conaway finished with 11 points and 16 rebounds.

Klein noted that the Dutch scored a lot of their points off of offensive rebounds and on the fast break.

While MOC-Floyd Valley committed 25 turnovers to ELC's 17, the Dutch out-rebounded the Midgets 34-21. Allie Sievert led ELC with 10 rebounds.

ELC (1-1 overall) will play Sioux City North today at Bishop Heelan High School. Game time is 2 p.m.

Heelan defeated Sioux City North 79-37 on Friday.
