ARMSTRONG - The Armstrong City Council Monday night agreed to solicit bids for a garbage truck and dumpsters.
The city has previously had Waste Management as its solid waste provider; however, it's been mulling buying a truck and doing the hauling itself. Mayor Marv Dailey said Monday night the council needed to decide at the meeting whether or not it wanted to go ahead with buying a truck. Estimates range from around $130,000 and up - plus the cost of containers.
"From a philosophical point of view I think it's a good idea," said council member Dave Grussing who moved that the council solicit bids for a truck and related containers.
The council agreed to solicit bids. Dissenting was council member Jon Larsen.
The council also voted to have Grussing and maintenance director Tom Leach negotiate with Maguire Iron of Sioux Falls, S.D. the cost of precoating and painting the inside of the water tower and fixing the top.
Maguire had earlier given a quote of $29,860 to fix the top of the water tower, and the council had asked for a quote for painting and coating the inside. Maguire returned a bid of $4,880 for hydro-zinc precoating and $27,570 for painting.
Connie Thackery, city clerk, noted that the total bid exceeded a bid threshold of $48,000 which would then require competitive quotes.
Grussing suggested that the city could possibly negotiate the price to below the $48,000 threshold - possibly $47,900.
Council member Adrian Hagebock moved that Grussing and Tom Leach negotiate the bid with Maguire, and the council approved.
In other business, the board approved a Class C on-sale liquor license for Dales Recreation and an off-sale license for Casey's.
At the suggestion of the Iowa Department of Transportation, the council also approved Resolution 2012-11, prohibiting parking in front of the new Casey's along Highway 9. Mayor Dailey said the state indicated it would put up a sign.
