Douglas “Jiggs” Smith

ESTHERVILLE - Memorial services for Douglas "Jiggs" Smith, 90, of Estherville, formerly Ceylon, will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, with?Pastor Lynn Elrod officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church only on Thursday.

He died on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.

Douglas Junior "Jiggs" Smith, the son of Walter and Vera (Hegarty) Smith, was born Aug. 15, 1922, on a farm on Eagle Lake north of Estherville.

He attended school at Ellerwarth District #4. In 1930, the family moved to a farm in Lake Belt Township, Martin County, Minn. He graduated from District #45 in 1937. He worked on the family farm. After the death of his father in 1942 he farmed the place for his mother.

On Feb. 14, 1948, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Null at the Methodist Parsonage in Estherville. The couple farmed until 1988. They raised beef cattle and hogs. In December of 1988 they retired and stayed on the farm. The couple did some traveling in their retirement and one special trip they made was to Calgary, Alberta Canada.

Left to cherish Jiggs' memory are his wife, Geraldine, of Estherville; children, Kathryn Kleine and her husband, Fred, of Becker, Minn., Peggy Laubenthal and her husband, Ken, of Bancroft and Perry Smith and his wife, Yvonne, of Madison Lake, Minn.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; brother, Francis, of Welcome, Minn.; sister, Marie Ankrum, of Vancouver, Wa. and sister-in-law, Betty Smith, of Plainview, Minn.

He has been preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leonard; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law and his mother and father-in-law.
