SPIRIT LAKE - The Estherville Lincoln Central High School Jazz Band, directed by Laura Giebler, will participate in the Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Band Festival/Contest on Saturday, Jan. 12, performing at 2:15 p.m.

There will be 13 high school jazz bands performing from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Spirit Lake Sami Bedell Center for the Performing Arts. Public is welcome to attend and hear some great jazz music. The Sami Bedell Center for the Performing Arts is home to #17 of 30 Yamaha limited-edition red concert grand pianos signed by music legend Elton John. It is the only piano of the 30 in a public facility, as all the other pianos are privately owned.

The Estherville Lincoln Central High School Jazz Band will perform the selections "Six by Six," "Tomorrow's Memories" and "No Hable Espanol."

A performance schedule of all the schools can be located at www.samicenter.org/JazzBand.pdf. The jazz bands will be evaluated by three adjudicators on jazz band ensemble characteristics of tone quality, blend, rhythmic feel, interpretation, precision, musicianship, solo improvisation and ensemble balance. Following the judged portion of the performance, each band will have a 20 minute session with a guest clinician.

Each band is rated according to Iowa High School Music Association guidelines receiving a rating of Division One-Superior, Division Two-Excellent, Division Three-Good, Division Four-Fair, Division Five-Poor, or choose to receive comments only.

The Sami Bedell Center for the Performing Arts is a state-of-the-art 1000 seat auditorium dedicated in April 2008 as an addition to the Spirit Lake High School and as a community-performing center.
