An Estherville man was cited early Saturday morning after fleeing the scene of an injury accident southeast of town.
Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens reported that at 11:09 p.m. Friday the sheriff's office received a call to a traffic accident a quarter-mile south of Estherville on 180th Street. The caller advised that a pickup had struck a bridge and the occupants were out of the vehicle.
Upon investigation of the scene, it was determined that the 2005 Ford pickup owned and driven by Austin Schmaus, 23, of Estherville was traveling southbound when it struck the east side of the cement bridge over Brown Creek then crossed the roadway, coming to a rest in the west ditch.
A passenger in the vehicle, Kyle Smith of Armstrong, received minor injuries and was not transported for treatment of his injuries.
Schmaus, the driver, fled the scene on foot before the arrival of sheriff's deputies. Schmaus was located about three hours after the accident and was transported to Avera Holy Family Hospital by private vehicle where he was treated and released for his injuries.
Schmaus was cited by the sheriff's office for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, possessing an open container of alcohol as the driver and failure to have control.
The 2005 Ford pickup sustained $22,000 in damage and is a total loss.
The Emmet County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Estherville Police Department.
