Today National Compliment Day

January 23, 2013
Estherville Daily News

Today is National Compliment Day, a day to show your appreciation for those around you.

So why bother, you might ask. No one ever pays me a compliment.

Well, that's exactly the point.

If you're on the receiving end, compliments mean a great deal. Even more, though, it should make us good by making others feel better about themselves.

And it can start right at home.

"Oh honey, what a wonderful breakfast," you might say to your spouse, or "Oh honey, that was so sweet of you to take out the trash."

Paying these sorts of compliments not only makes people feel good. It also motivates them to do the things we'd rather not do ourselves.

Or how about on the way to work. That person who cuts you off or who's on your left at a four-way stop and takes the right of way anyway? Well maybe you could say something like, "Thank you for giving me more time on my trip to work so I can enjoy the scenery along the way."

Or how about work. Maybe your boss gives you a real chewing out and says you aren't getting nearly enough done, and no, you aren't getting a raise this year, because if there's someone in the office or plant that doesn't deserve a raise, it's you.

Well a good response to that would be, "Well thank you. I really appreciate a sincere and honest performance evaluation. And I know that only a caring and kind person such as you could give me one."

Or maybe you're having lunch and the server puts some unrecognizable substance in front of you. Maybe the phrase "mystery meet" from your hitch in the military comes back to you. "Oh gee, what a wonderful entree. This is the epitome of epicurean delight," you might say. And then work up your best smile as you try not to gag.

As you can see, it's easy to pay someone a compliment.

And doesn't that make you feel a lot better about yourself?
