To the Editor:
It is unfortunate that the So. 6th Street rezoning issue was defeated by the majority of FIVE members of the city council.
We have SEVEN elected council members to represent the community's best interests. An issue as important to the community as a zoning change deserves the votes of ALL SEVEN council members.
It looks to me like the 3 council members who voted no on the rezoning issue were actually voting on a permit to operate an animal shelter. That was not the issue. The issue was a zoning issue. Should this parcel of land be zoned General Business or Highway Commercial?
I would respectfully ask the city council to reconsider this issue at a future council meeting, after a second notice of public hearing and that ALL members of the city council cast their vote one way or the other.
I am convinced that, given some additional information & focusing on the zoning issue, the city council will do the right thing for the community and the Emmet County Animal Shelter will have received a decision of the majority of SEVEN council members.
