DES MOINES - Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire heavyweight Cody Thompson can finish no worse than sixth after the Titan wrestler went 2-1 on Friday.
Thompson, an unranked sophomore, lost his quarterfinal match by fall in 5:14 to ninth-ranked Mitch Gambrill of Clarion-Goldfield (24-8).
But Thompson came back and moved into the medal round with a 7-3 decision over Garrett Johnson (40-13) of Panorama, Panora in the second-round consolation match.
That set up a third-round consolation match against Dylan Conley (39-9) of Moravia.
That match was tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, but Thompson came up with a takedown and a 3-1 victory in the first sudden victory period.
Today's consolation semifinal match for Thompson will be against third-ranked Landon Paulsen (50-1) of Woodbury Central. The top half of the consolation bracket features Gambrill (24-9) and second-ranked Chris Schleugler (44-3) of West Hancock.
