DES MOINES - Spirit Lake Park's Doug Miner will have his chance at a third straight final after winning both his quarterfinal and semifinal 120-pound matches on Friday.
Miner will face fourth-ranked Shadow Leshen of Albia in tonight's final. Leshen defeated top-ranked Leighton Gaul of New Hampton, 3-1, with a takedown in the closing second of that match.
Meanwhile teammate Zach Skopec (138) won his quarterfinal match, but lost in the semifinals. He will face sixth-ranked Sergeant Bluff-Luton's Steven Garcia in today's consolation semifinals.
Miner, in a quest for his third straight title, took on third-ranked and previously unbeaten Charlie Jones of Columbus Catholic in the quarterfinal. Miner, ranked second at 120 pounds, did what he needed to do for a 7-3 victory.
In his semifinal match, Miner faced sixth-ranked Brady Jennings of Osage.
Miner went on the attack first with a takedown and three nearfall points. After an escape by Jennings, Miner recorded another takedown to lead 7-1. Jennings battled back with a takedown in the second period and an escape in the third, but Miner held on for a 7-4 win.
In his quarterfinal, Skopec also took on the third-ranked wrestler in his weight, 138 pounds, in Davenport Assumption's Eric Clarke. Skopec scored a takedown and five back points in the first period and cruised to an 11-3 major decision.
That set up a semifinal match against fifth-ranked Adam Staudt of Charles City.
Skopec scored the first takedown of the match in the second period and led 3-1 after an escape in the third. But Staudt caught Skopec out of position, got the takedown and pinned the Indian wrestler in 5:39.
