Evan Hansen is a young man of many talents.

He's big-time into athletics, most recently as a point guard for the Estherville Lincoln Central basketball team.

Last summer, he took Grand Champion in three areas, pen of three, barrow and gilt, at the Emmet County Fair. He's also held the office of vice president, secretary and treasurer for the Center Champions 4-H Club.

Donald Hersom, Veterans of Foreign Wars District 10 commander, presented Evan Hansen an award for his first place in district competition in the Voice of Democracy essay contest last fall. Hansen also took fifth place statewide. And now, after winning locally and at district, he's taken fifth place in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy essay contest and received $100 for his essay.

Evan said Steve McCauley, his government teacher at Estherville Lincoln Central, inspired him to write his Voice of Democracy essay. So he took several days composing it.

"He really supported this," said Evan. "He's the reason I did it."

Evan took first locally then first at district before going on to take fifth statewide.

Evan said he'll probably go to Iowa Lakes this fall and that he might try the basketball program.

Evan is the son of Doug and Caryle Hansen.
