The Iowa Lakes Community College Men's Basketball team, now 26-6 on the season, will head to Danville, Ill., for the NJCAA Div. II National Tournament.
Official brackets for the tournament have just been released. The unseeded Lakers will face #8 seed, the Express, from Owens Community College (Perrysburg, Ohio). The game will take place March 19 at 11 a.m.
Owens comes into the national tournament with a 24-8 overall win-loss record. They have three players that average in double digit scoring: James Kelly (18.9/game), Justin Edmonds (18/game), and Joe Retic II (10.7/game). Kelly is also leading the Express in rebounds with 10.7 per game.
The Lakers have taken pride all season in being a team threat. Deondre Parks is leading the team in scoring with 15.2 points per game and he grabs 5.5 rebounds per game, Kelly Madison scores 14.2 and gets 5.4 rebounds per game, Ben Shellim adds 14 ppg and 3.5 rpg, and Josh Schaben averages 10.9 points a game and a team leading 7.1 rebounds per game. The other starter is Kevin Larson, who doesn't score a lot but distributes the ball well, giving his team 4 assists per game along with bring down 3.3 rebounds.
"Our guys are very excited about making it to Danville and playing in the national tournament. Owens is a quality opponent," said Head Coach Troy Larson. "We are looking forward to a good week of practice to be prepared."
The victor will take on the winner of No. 1 seed Mott Community College and Central Community College - Columbus (Neb.).
