Sometimes handmade is the only way to make something.

A handmade cedar chest made from reclaimed lumber from the old Armstrong school, one of the many prizes at this year's Friends of the Emmet County Nature Center banquet, is on display at Northstar Bank at 2202 Central Ave. in Estherville.

Kim Swanson, Emmet County Conservation Board and Friends of the Emmet County Nature Center board member, made the chest from maple boards from the floors of the old school.

Lining the chest are aromatic cedar boards that actually came from old telephone poles.

Swanson acquired the lumber from fellow board member Deb Zollner.

Also on display at Northstar is a print by renowned wildlife artist Larry Zach, American Robin and Daylilies.

The banquet is this Saturday at the Estherville Elks Lodge. The doors open to social hour at 5 p.m. with dinner starting at 5:30 and the program and auction at 7:15 p.m.

Tickets are limited and are available by calling the Nature Center at 712-867-4422.
