When Estherville Mayor Kenny Billings Thursday signed a proclamation naming Monday,
April 1, 2013 as SSG Steve Blass Day in Estherville, it was a very fitting tribute. On hand for the signing were Steve's parents, Randy and Carol, and his wife, Tricia, and their son Hayden.
Monday would have been Steve's 28th birthday.
Before Billings signed the proclamation, Carol reflected that after flags were distributed a week ago Thursday around Estherville, she placed the remainder in her yard.
There were 27 - Steve's age when he was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan March 11.
Foundation event next Friday
The Avera Holy Family Foundation Wholly Grape & Ale annual event will be held 5-9 p.m. Friday, April 5 at the Estherville Golf Course. The theme this year is Fabulous 50's, and everyone is encouraged to don bobby socks and saddle shoes for the occasion.
This is a great event that raises money for much-needed equipment and other items at Avera Holy Family Hospital. It's a relatively painless way to help a great cause.
We are indeed lucky to have such a fine hospital and clinic right here in Estherville. If you just stop to think about the tremendous improvements we've seen over just the last 10 years, it's truly remarkable.
Your attendance at the Wholly Grape & Ale event - and support of the hospital foundation in general - is key in making our hometown community hospital the great healthcare facility that it is.
