Avera, police team up for drug take back

May 1, 2013
Estherville Daily News

On Saturday, April 27, 2013, officers from the Estherville Police Department and staff members from Avera Holy Family Hospital joined in the National Drug Take Back Initiative for the third time in the last 18 months.

The community participated in the event by bringing their medications to a drop off box located in the front entry of the hospital. Police officers and staff worked to secure the medicine and ensure that it was properly packaged for shipment to St. Louis for incineration.

The purpose of this event is to keep the unused and expired medication out of the hands of criminals, to protect the water sources and septic sewer systems, as well as, to prevent accidental ingestion by children or anyone.

Saturday's event produced 101 pounds of shipped medicine, compared to 98 pounds that was collected in two events last year.

Officials from Avera Holy Family and the police department were pleased with Saturday's results and look forward to the next collection event that will likely occur this fall.

Police and hospital officials thank all those that participated in this important project to keep the community a safe place.
