HAMPTON - The Estherville Lincoln Central girls' golf season came to end with a sixth-place finish at the Class 3A Women's Regional 1B Golf Tournament at Hampton on Monday.
Kuemper Catholic won the tournament with a 383 while host Hampton-Dumont placed second with a 401. Both will advance to the Region 1 Tournament.
Algona placed third with 425 followed by Garner-Hayfield/Ventura with 432, Clarion-Goldfield with 434, ELC with 453, South Central Calhoun with 477 and Forest city with 510.
"It was the last meet for seniors Britnay Busch and Shelby Lappegard," said ELC coach Kevin Richardson. "These two have only played golf for 13-14 months and can shoot in the upper 50s for scores; this is really good. You just wonder how good they could have been if they would have played for four years.
Tia Bernholtz led ELC with a 107 while Shelby Lappegard shot a 111, Lauren Moeller a 112 and Britnay Busch a 123.
"Britnay shot a little higher today which is to be expected on a more difficult course," Richardson said. "There were a number of sharp doglegs and other hazards. Shelby had a season low nine hole score with a 51-10 strokes better than her first round 61. "Lauren had a good day with a 56 and 56," the coach continued. "This was good considering she had a few bad holes with 10s."
"Tia was off a little today; she would score well on one hole and then have a bad one," said Richardson. "She has had a very good year medaling in four of the seven meets we played."
