WindTech 2013 at Iowa Lakes

May 14, 2013
By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer , Estherville Daily News

Sixty students and 20 working wind technicians Tuesday attended the first day of a two-day conference, WindTech 2013, sponsored jointly by Windpower Engineering & Development magazine and Iowa Lakes Community College.

According to Paul Dvorak, editor of the Cleveland-based magazine, staff members saw a need for the magazine to reach out to its readers.

"One of our staff recognized there was a need for it," said Dvorak. The magazine, which has been around for four years, is part of WTWH Media of Cleveland.

Nine corporate partners provided training at the wind energy and turbine technology building and had exhibits in the college gym:

n Sika

n Aztec Bolting

n Spider suspended access equipment

n Hytorc Wind, LLC

n MOOG

n RAD Torque Systems

n Snap-on

n IWEA (Iowa Wind Energy Association)

The training provided certifications for Iowa Lakes wind students and technicians already working in the wind industry.

"We try to make this hands-on," Dvorak explained, contrasting it with other conferences.

"This (ILCC) is about the topnotch school for wind training in the United States," Dvorak said.

This event is the second Windpower has held, with the first at Texas State Technical College last year. The two other colleges on the WindTech training schedule for this year are the College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif. and Columbia Gorge Community College in Columbia River Gorge, Ore.

Courtney Seel, Windpower regional account manager, said WindTech demonstrates to students and working technicians the right way to use equipment.

Wednesday's program continues with Al Zeitz, the first director of the Iowa Lakes wind energy and turbine technology program, giving the morning keynote and Lt. Gov. Sally Reynolds giving the KidWind kickoff noon to 12:30 p.m.
