DES MOINES - Senior Kendra Stokke gave the Spirit Lake Park girls' team its first medal of the Class 3A State Meet on Friday.
Stokke finished the 400-meter hurdles in 1 minute, 8.51 seconds to place eighth. She edged past five other competitors for the final medal with 26 hundredths of a second separating eighth through 13th place.
A Lakes Conference runner won the event as Spencer senior Taylor Glover finished in 1:04.06.
Jenna McCoy ran the 100-meter hurdle prelims where she finished 11th in 16.55 seconds. To qualify for the finals, the time to beat was 16.24 seconds. Spencer's Ali Meister turned in the top time in the prelims of 14.92 seconds.
McCoy and teammate Emma Dau both took part in the long jump. A half inch separated the SLP duo as McCoy finished 13th with a leap of 16 feet, 1 inches and Dau leaped 16 feet, 1/2 inch. To earn a medal, the competitors would have had to leap at least 16 feet, 5 inches. Leslie Taylor of Mount Pleasant won the event with a leap of 18 feet.
The Spirit Lake Park girls wrap up the state meet today as Dondi Schmidt runs the 1500-meter run at 2:35 p.m.
