Titans, Warriors split doubleheader in Graettinger

GRAETTINGER - The fifth inning was the deciding factor in both games of a doubleheader between North Union and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Monday.

In one game, GTRA put together a six-run fifth inning and held on for a 7-5 victory. In the second game, North Union scored five runs in the fifth to go from a one-run advantage to an 8-2 lead. The Warriors then scored four in the seventh to win 12-2.

In the Titans' victory, Blaze Alesch pitched a complete game as he gave up five runs (one earned) on 10 hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks.

Cody Runksmeier pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up four runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Colin Runksmeier took the loss as he gave up three runs (none earned) on five hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Titans started the fifth inning as Zach Chicoine reached on an error and a one-out double by Ethan Petersen scored the first run. Michael Girres and Logan Flaharty both singled as the second run came home. With two outs, an infield single by Marcus Girres plated another run. Andrew Aeilts also had an infield hit to score a run and Chicoine ended the inning with an RBI single.

North Union looked to rally in the seventh. Cody Runksmeier reached on a one-out error and Sawyer Doocy singled. A double by Spencer Ricke scored one run. With two outs a second error allowed Alex Deitering to reach first and drive in Doocy. But Alesch struck out Brandon Kollasch to end the game.

At the plate for he Warriors, Doocy was 4-4 with an RBI while Ricke was 2-4 with three RBIs.

For the Titans, Michael Girres was 3-4 with an RBI. Flaharty, Marcus Girres, Kyle Dalen, Andrew Aeilts, Chicoine and Petersen each went 1-3 with an RBI.

In the second game, North Union entered the fifth inning with a 3-2 edge. Ricke drew a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Johnson. After a walk to Alex Deitering, Ricke scored on a passed ball. Kollasch and Jake Govern were both hit by pitch. A two-out single by Colin Runksmeier brought home two runs and Cody Runksmeier followed with a one-out RBI single threw the left side of the infield. Doocy and Ricke were then both hit by a pitch but the Warriors' damage was limited when Johnson grounded out to third base.

Justin Rodrigues took the loss as he gave up four earned runs on four hits with six walks and two strikeouts. Marcus Girres pitched two innings and gave up eight runs (six earned) on three hits with three walks and one strikeout. Six Warriors were hit by a pitch.

Cody Runksmeier pitched six innings in the win giving up two unearned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Kollasch pitched one inning and struck out one batter.

For North Union, Cody Runksmeier was 3-5 with two RBIs while Colin Runksmeier was 1-4 with three RBIs and Govern was 2-4 with an RBI. Deitering had two RBIs.

For the Titans, Alesch, Marcus Girres, Dalen and Chicoine each were 1-3 with Alesch and Dalen each with an RBI.

North Union (5-4 overall) was scheduled to take on Newman Catholic in Mason City on Tuesday. The Warriors hosts Spencer in Bancroft on Thursday.

GTRA (2-3 overall) hosts Manson-Northwest Webster on Thursday in Ruthven.
