EMMETSBURG - Estherville Lincoln Central battled all the way back from a 7-1 deficit to take an 8-7 lead over Emmetsburg. But the Midgets then gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth and weren't able to manufacture any runs in the top of the seventh in the 9-8 loss.
ELC trailed 7-1 heading into the fifth inning, when Emmetsburg reliever Jake Jackson got into trouble. The Midgets sent 10 batters to the plate, drew four walks, had a hit batter and then consecutive singles by Billy Snyder and Adam Reiter to score four runs and cut the deficit to 7-5.
The E'Hawks' defense continued to struggle as Snyder led of the top of the sixth by reaching on an error and Matt Burrell hit a one-out double.
Tucker Milburn and Justin Frederick both drew walks as the one run crossed the plate. Two runs then scored on a double by Tyler Swanson as ELC took the lead.
But the Midgets, who had worked out of a jam in the fifth inning, couldn't accomplish the same feat in the sixth.
ELC started the inning with an error and then Matt Burrell, who took over for starter Swanson in the fifth, hit the second batter. Both Burrell and first baseman Bryce Hansen then charged a bunt to the right side, but no one covered first base as all runners were safe. A walk brought in the tying run and the E'Hawks pushed across the go-ahead run before Burrell struck out the final two batters.
But the damage was done as ELC went down in order in the seventh inning.
ELC finished with five hits on the night. Burrell took the loss while Swanson earned a no-decision.
ELC (4-8 overall) is on the road against LeMars on Wednesday.
The Estherville Lincoln Central Junior Varsity was unable to hold on to a 2-0 lead against Emmetsburg as the two teams finished in a 2-2 after playing eight innings.
ELC led 2-0 when the E'Hawks scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Austin Egeland pitched six innings and gave up three hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Carsten Bosch pitched two innings and gave one hit and one walk while recording one strikeout.
At the plate, Dan Christensen was 2-2 and Alec Wycoff was 1-3 with a double. Bosch had a sacrifice RBI.
