CHEROKEE - The Cherokee Braves gave up some free bases to Estherville Lincoln Central and the Midgets took advantage, rallying from a 4-0 deficit to win 8-5 on Monday.
"We just found a way to win," said ELC coach Lee Evans. "It wasn't a pretty game, but we put pressure on their defense.
ELC trailed 4-0 when the scoring began in the third inning. Evan Hansen was hit by a pitch and Adam Reiter had an infield single. After Derek Nieland was hit by a pitch, Matt Burrell came up with a two-RBI single. A third run scored when Tyler Swanson reached base on a Cherokee error as ELC cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Midgets scored their next five runs in the fifth inning.
Billy Snyder led off with a single and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by Reiter. Nieland and Burrell both drew walks to load the bases and Tucker Milburn singled to bring two runs home. Swanson drew a walk to load the bases and a run scored when Bryce Hansen drew a walk and Corey Reeves was hit by a pitch.
ELC had just six hits in the game. Reiter was 2-3 while Burrell was 1-2 with two RBIs, Reeves was 1-3 with an RBI, Milburn was 1-4 with two RBIs and Snyder was 1-4.
Snyder picked up the win on the mound. He pitched six innings giving up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Burrell closed the door. He faced three batters in the seventh and struck out two.
ELC is home Wednesday against Western Christian.
The ELC Junior Varsity edged Cherokee 3-2. Carsten Bosch pitched six innings and struck out four while walking four. Dan Christensen pitched the seventh inning and struck out all three batters he faced to earn the save.
At the plate, Tim Greving was 2-2 with a triple; Hunter King was 1-2 with two RBIs and Austin Egeland was 1-2.
