Softball playoffs begin next week

"Win or go home" is the popular saying once the playoffs come along.

For area softball teams, that time begins next week.

The postseason begins this Monday for Class 1A teams.

Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire (7-20) is on the road against Laurens-Marathon (5-22) in Laurens at 7 p.m. this Monday.

The Chargers haven't won since defeating the Titans 8-4 on June 18.

The winner will face Bishop Garrigan (13-16) in Algona at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10.

Estherville Lincoln Central (17-10) will host Algona (10-13) at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 9 in a Class 3A Region 1 first-round matchup. The Midgets ended the season winning four of their last five games.

Junior Sara Steinman leads the Bulldogs offensively and defensively. She leads the team at the plate with a .429 batting average with 30 hits including 10 doubles, a triple and 23 RBIs. Steinman also has pitched most of the innings this year while compiling a 9-11 record with a 4.41 ERA. She has struck out 72 and walked 13.

ELC relies on junior Liz Brashear on the mound. She has compiled a 13-6 record with a 1.93 ERA with 81 strikeouts and 34 walks.

Senior shortstop Emily Kirchner leads ELC at the plate with a .354 batting average with 29 hits including six doubles, three triples, one home run and 24 RBIs.

The winner of Algona/ELC will take on the Forest City (11-14) vs. Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (1-27) winner at 7 p.m., Friday, July 12 in Estherville.

Also in Class 3A Region 1, Spirit Lake (18-15) will go on the road against Sioux Center (18-10). The two teams played Friday at Spirit Lake with the rematch in Sioux Center on Tuesday. The winner will play at 7 p.m. Friday against either Sheldon (13-12) or Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (19-3).

Meanwhile Class 2A top-ranked North Union earns a first-round bye. The Warriors await Tuesday's winner of Lake Mills (12-12) vs. Belmond-Klemme (5-18). The second-round game will be played at 7 p.m., Wednesday in Swea City.
