The Emmet County Wellness Coalition discussed the community Health Needs Assessment and Implementation Plan and other issues at its monthly meeting Wednesday.
Kathy Preston, coalition chair and Emmet County Public Health director, said the plan will address such issues as obesity, cardiovascular disease, elderly falls, connections with the Hispanic and Latino community and delays in health services. She said a meeting will be held Friday to decide what needs to be done at this point.
The group also discussed Emmet County Water Trails Association activities, including Paddle Craft 101 held in conjunction with the Emmet County Nature Center. A total of 25 attended.
Jen Hough, Avera Holy Family Health community relations manager, said a community blood drive will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 16. No appointment is necessary.
Britney Rosburg of Emmet County ISU Extension noted the Emmet County Fair coming up and the Strengthening Families program starting in September. Rosburg said there will be a focus on substance abuse.
Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Lexie Hash previewed a lot of new events for Sweet Corn Days, including a 5K, 10K and half-marathon for the Run for the Cob. There will also be a hula hoop contest, family night, motorcycle poker run and truck rodeo at United Methodist Church among other events. Gospel in the Square will be held Sept. 21. Hash said there will be a fun run in October, incorporating the Whitetail Ridge Interpretive Trail.
Jackie Mart said she will speak next Thursday, July 18 at the Couch to 5K program at the Estherville Public Library and in August she'll offer yoga training at Yoga Okoboji.
Preston said ECPH is gearing up for flu shots and immunizations. She said Emmet County also has a nurse consultant serving four counties.
Regional Wellness Center director Bob Grems said the summer fitness session just began. The senior fitness program will be held every other Friday in the summer and every Friday starting this fall. Grems also previewed the Energizer Plus program for kids at the RWC.
GKN is sponsoring the 500 challenge as well as its ongoing Fruit of the Month program for employees.
