Warriors repel Rebels with ease

NU’s Doocy strikes out 11

SPIRIT LAKE - North Union took care of business in defeating Sioux Central 10-0 in six innings in a Class 2A district 2 second-round game in Spirit Lake on Tuesday.

The Warriors (25-8) advance to Saturday's district final game against Spirit Lake (14-10), who defeated Emmetsburg, 17-6 in five innings, in the other district semifinal on Tuesday.

Sawyer Doocy started on the mound for North Union and had a no-hitter heading into the top of the sixth inning before a one-out single by Franky Perkins. Doocy finished the night with 11 strikeouts with four walks and a hit batter. However, the sixth inning was the only one that the Rebels had two runners on base at once.

Brandon Kollasch closed out the final two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout and then induced a grounder off the bat of Nick Amendolare.

Offensively, North Union opened up the scoring in the first inning.

With two outs, Doocy was hit by a pitch. Courtesy runner Trent Pederson scored on a double by Spencer Ricke. Garrett Johnson and Alex Deitering drew consecutive walks off Sioux Central starter Tim Saunders. Kollasch followed with a single up the middle to bring in two runs.

"We got the big hits in that first inning," said North Union coach Chad Slagle. "Any time you can score first, you play a little differently. That first inning just set the tone for us."

The Warriors had base runners in each of the next two innings, but didn't score again until the fourth.

No. 9 batter Jake Adams reached base on a on one-out Rebel error. With two outs, Colin Runksmeier and Doocy each delivered RBI singles. Ricke reached on the Rebels' second error and Johnson followed with an RBI single. Deitering was hit by a pitch and a passed ball allowed Ricke to score as North Union led 7-0.

North Union kept up the pressure in the fifth inning.

Govern was hit by a pitch and Adams singled. Cody Runksmeier hit a ball down the third-base line s Govern was out on the force.

But Colin Runksmeier reached on another Rebel error as Adams scored. Doocy Drew a walk to load the bases. Ricke then struck out for the second out, but the ball got past the catcher as Cody Runksmeier scored.

In the sixth inning, Kollasch reached on a one-out error. Courtesy runner Pederson stole second and the game on a double by Govern down the left-field line.

"I thought we did a good job of winning innings," said Slagle. "We also had some good at-bats."

Saunders took the loss has he gave up five hits with three hit batters, two walks and no strikes.

For North Union, Doocy was 1-1, Johnson was 1-2; Govern and Adam each were 1-3 and Colin Runksmeier and Ricke each were 1-4.
