County receives insurance refund

July 16, 2013

It pays to be safe.

The Emmet County Board of Supervisors Tuesday received a $16,439 Workers Comp insurance dividend from Nancy Danielson of Blum & Leonard Insurance.

"Whatever you're doing is helping," Danielson said. She said it appears that the county's policy of paying the deductible many not be as beneficial as it was in the past. However, she said she would like to "see the dust settle" and suggested the county continue to pay the deductible on claims.

With a projected MOD factor (the insured's claims history) of .87, with 1.0 being average, Danielson said the current MOD was 1.03. "I was anticipating good. I wasn't anticipating that good," Danielson said of the improvement, noting that over the past three years the county has received $30,000 in dividends. She credited a lot of that to employees.

"They're thinking before they act at work," she said.

Danielson also credited Mike Raynor, county safety program coordinator, for helping keep down claims.

"I think that's money that's pretty well spent," Danielson said. "If your MOD comes in at .87 your employees deserve a great big thank you."
