ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for Sam Torrence, 96, of Estherville will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, July 20 at Grandview Baptist Church in Estherville. Interment with full military honors will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Estherville. He died on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., Saturday at the church.
Samuel D. Torrence the son of Charles A. and Caroline E. (Reinboldt) Torrence was born March 11, 1917 in Kranzburg, S.D.
He received his education in Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School. He then attended Estherville Junior College. Sam served in the United States Navy during World War II.
On Dec. 27, 1947 he was united in marriage to Genevieve M. Godsil. The couple made their home in Estherville and Sam worked for Gamble Robinson, was a policeman and then a rural mail carrier for the United States Post Office.
He was a member of Grandview Baptist Church in Estherville.
Left to cherish Sam's memory are his wife, Genevieve of Estherville; his children, Nance Torrence of Minnetonka, Minn.; Bob (Marty) Torrence of Urbandale; Barbara Hess of Prior Lake, Minn.; Donald Torrence of Savage, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Michael Hess; Kelli Johnson; Janelle Torrence; Grant Henriksen; Dan Torrence; Lynn Ciocan; Marlee Torrence; Marlo Torrence; six great grandchildren, Kaylen Torrence; Audrina Hess; Colton Torrence; Will Johnson; Cullen Hess and Hayden Johnson.
He has been preceded in death by his parents, son, Jack; siblings, Irene Maloney; Robert Torrence; George Torrence; and Nellie Torrence.
