Mary was born in Estherville where she attended grade school, junior high and high school and graduated in 1954. She was in many activities and was president as well as valedictorian of her class. She attended Creighton University, College of Nursing, in Omaha, Neb., and earned her professional registered nurse degree in 1958. She had RN certificates from both the states of Nebraska and California.
Mary and three of her classmates moved to Oakland, Calif., after graduation where she was employed as a nurse for a plastic surgeon for several years. In 1975, she was the victim of a violent crime and was hospitalized for several weeks. After her recovery, she moved to Lafayette, Calif., and returned to work for another plastic surgeon. Unfortunately, Mary suffered from a cerebral aneurysm, which burst as a result of the criminal attack. She never fully recovered and was moved to Southern California, where she spent her remaining years in various nursing homes. She passed away from a heart attack at Providence Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, Calif., on Aug. 3, 2013, at the age of 77.
Mary is survived by her brother, Gerald Scholtes and wife Helen of Valencia, Calif., their son, Gary Scholtes and his family of Lancaster, Calif.; her sister, Margaret Lynch and husband Jack of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and their sons and daughters Laurel Garcia and family of Rescue, Calif., Lisa Lynch of Anaheim Hills, John Lynch and family of Fullerton, Calif., and Mike Lynch and family of Corona, Calif.
Mary was always a very active, happy and friendly person. She loved to travel and meet people, and was always easy to talk to. As she often said, "I love life."
Family funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Sept. 10, 2013 at the Chapel in San Fernando Mission Cemetery, Interment will be at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills, Calif.
