Lakers go 0-4 at home tourney

The Iowa Lakes volleyball team struggled through its own tournament during Labor Day Weekend, posting a 0-4 record on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 30, 31.

The Lakers were swept 3-0 by Central Community College and Johnson County Community College on Friday. Scores against Central were 25-20, 25-15, 25-22.

The Lakers lost to Johnson County 25-15, 25-14, 25-7.

Against Johnson County, Paitton Heltenberg and Andrea Orth led the Lakers with six kills each. Jordan Going had four kills. Michelle Van Epps finished with 20 set assists and Kylee Ellenberger had seven digs. Also Heltenberg had three blocks.

On Saturday, the Lakers opened with a 3-0 loss to Iowa Western by scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-8.

Orth led the Lakers with seven kills while Going had four. VanEpps finished with 14 assists and Shelby Budmayr had five digs.

In the final game of the tournament, Iowa Lakes lost 3-1 to Northeast Community College. After losing the first game 25-8, the Lakers bounced back with a 25-19 win in game two, but lost the final two games 25-22, 25-17.

Heltenberg led the Lakers with 13 kills while Going and Orth each had seven. VanEpps finished with 30 set assists. Going also had three aces.

Defensively, Nicolette O'Keefe had 17 digs and VanEpps had 11. Heltenberg had five blocks and Orth had four.
