SPIRIT LAKE - Although defending Class 2A Champion Spirit Lake has plenty of new faces, the Indians had little trouble in the season opener in defeating Okoboji 63-0 on Friday, Aug. 30.
Spirit Lake threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns while running for 234 yards and four touchdowns in the victory.
In his first varsity start, Alec Henrickson was 8-of-15 passing for 221 yards and three scores.
On the ground, the Indians used a host of ball carriers led by Josh Hofstra who ran the ball seven times for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Henrickson finished with 64 yards on nine carries. Also Trevor Jensen had two carries for 43 yards, Billy Brown carried the ball three times for 11 yards and one touchdown and Logan Backhaus had two carries for 13 yards with one touchdown. Kenten Murray finished with 12 yards on four carries, Zane Bosch had 1 carry for 16 yards, Axel Johnston had one carry for 7 yards and Tyler Jenness had one carry for 4 yards.
Receiving, Will Hall caught three passes for 32 yards; Mike Meschede caught two for 76 yards and a touchdown, Johnston caught two for 67 yards and a touchdown, Jensen caught two fro 24 yards and a touchdown, Auston Folsom had one catch for 43 yards and Caleb Jennings caught one pass for 11 yards.
Defensively, Drew Fowler had a team-high six tackles. Tanner Kroon had four tackles including three for a loss and one sack. Will Hall also had a sack.
Folsom, Jennings, Cory Meschede and Paul Woizeschke each snagged an interception. Tyler Alger, Dan Chapman and Axel Johnston all recovered a fumble.
